Energy - Buran was a space program of the Soviet reusable transport space system, one of the two systems ever implemented in the world. The program was a response to a similar multipurpose US civilian Space Shuttle program.
    It consisted of
    Buran
    ("Snowstorm" or "Blizzard")
    orbital ship, and
Energy - a Soviet super-heavy carrier rocket developed by NPO Energia, the most powerful of the Soviet launch vehicles and one of the most powerful in the world.
The program was launched in 1974.
Buran orbital spacecraft-spaceplane made its first and only space flight in unmanned mode on November 15, 1988, and in 1993 the
    project
    was formally suspended.
