    Description

Extremely rare, vintage WWII Japanese Army hinged wooden box to store the quadrant used with the Type 90 75mm Field Artillery from the Battle of the Philippines in 1945.  This box was picked up by my father in Manila in 1945 during his service with the US Army.  The box is numbered #366 which I believe corresponds to the ID number of the gun it was used with.  There were only 786 of these Type 90 field guns produced by Japan between 1932 and 1945.
The box is a well constructed wooden box with "S" shaped sliding hooks for closure on the front; two sturdy hinges on the back and numerous flathead screws holding the box together; it measures 8" across, 7" deep and 3 1/2" high (see photos).  I have had the writing on the box cover analyzed and the interpretation reads as follows:
The top line reads from right to left: gun-90-style-artillery.
The bottom line reads from right to left: case for quadrant.
