EMPEROR HIROHITO. Emperor Hirohito (born 1901) was the Emperor of Japan from 1926 to his death in 1989. His reign was marked by rapid militarization and aggressive wars against China and the United States. Following the devastating result of the atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima during World War II, Hirohito renounced his divinity in favor of a democratic constitutional monarchy.
VIRTUALLY NONEXISTENT ORIGINAL BRONZE PLAGUE CELEBRATING THE MARRIAGE OF JAPANESE EMPEROR HIROHITO TO NAGAKO IN JANUARY 1924
Original bronze plaque celebrating the marriage of then Crown Prince Hirohito and Princess Nagako in January 1924. The front depicts Hirohito and Nagako with the imperial chrysanthemum and there is an artist signature “S. HATA” on the bottom left corner. In addition, the back depicts two trees with an additional artist signature “I. SATO” on the bottom left corner. The plaque contains the maker’s mark at the bottom, measures 3” by 2.5”, in fine condition with some darkening from age, and accompanied with the original stand and green velvet case. We were unable to locate a similar item related to Hirohito’s marriage available for sale at auction the in the past 25 years making the present plaque virtually nonexistent.
